What Is Your Domain Name Worth?

Unlike other industries, the value of a domain name is very difficult to assess. While there are many valuation tools like Go Daddy Valuation or Estibot.com these can be guides to a domains potential they do not usually reflect the domain’s market value. While we’ve listed some key “value drivers” for domain valuations, please know that a formal domain valuation is available upon request.

1) Domain Extension.

A domain extension is the letters to the right of the dot in a domain with .com being the most widely used and usually highest value. While other domain extensions can have value (.net, .org, .io or .xyz) they are typically of less value than if the domain name was in the .com extension.

2) Keyword Use in Culture and Commerce.

The more commonly used the keyword(s) to the left of the dot are the more valuable the domain can be. Is the keyword(s) uses frequently in high profile products or is it a trending term in an industry? The answer to that question can be found by using google or “Spyfu.com” to see how often that keyword(s) searched on a monthly basis. Be sure to do some keyword research to find potential buyers or companies that may use those words in their brand.

3) Domain Length

The length of the domain name is a critical factor in the valuation. The typical rule of thumb is “The shorter the domain the better” with single dictionary words being the most valuable.

4) Pronounceable and Easy to Remember

Domains that are pronounceable and easy to remember can make a good brand and carry a higher value.

This is just a short list of key attributes for domain valuation; however, there are many additional factors that will add to it’s value. some additional things may be the age, CPC, comparable sales, number of potential buyers and demand for the key word. While none of these alone will show a value, our experience and understanding of the industry will help us determine the overall value of your name.
